Charly’s research focuses on the connections between diverse artistic mediums, and she is currently developing a long term project called Movenglish®: a movement language in progress with a word-to-word correspondence to English that seeks to preserve and embody the nuances of written/spoken language. She believes that artistic translations can destroy established hierarchies of expression by engaging with materials that were formerly deemed “more suitable” for other artforms, which bears an important analogy with aesthetic-political interventions and their power to wrench people from the limitations that society has saddled them with, allowing for new and emancipatory forms of engagement. By rupturing the boundaries that partition experience, artistic translation and political resistance can be used to dismantle prevailing power structures and work toward establishing more equitable communities.
